PROGRAMMING

The bootcamp will be divided into four (4) 90-minute training sessions designed to best address the needs of students: Storytelling/writing, photography/videography, digital, and on-air presentation.

STORYTELLING/WRITING
This workshop is designed to help students comprehend writing for the various platforms in journalism and knowing the difference between writing for print and digital versus writing for broadcast. Students will also participate in writing exercises to gain a hands-on practice of journalistic writing. This is key to any job a student wants to hold within the journalism industry.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY
This workshop will be divided into two (2) sections: Photography and videography.

There are students who solely want to become better photojournalists when covering sports, live events, and news. The photography workshop will teach students just how to do that on digital cameras and their smartphones.

When it comes to putting newspackages together or creating content for the digital medium, there are many elements that go into a story. However, none is more important than the visuals. The videography workshop will show students how to shoot for news, including shooting b-roll, how to shoot video from different angles, and creatively tell stories through video.

DIGITAL
This interactive workshop is designed to show students how to identify news and accurately gather information from social mediums. They will also learn best practices for using social media as a tool to engage with their audience.

ON-AIR PRESENTATION
Students often go on camera and play reporter versus just being the reporter. In this hands-on workshop, students will receive guidance and feedback on their on-air presence, including advice on how to do stand-ups with energy and personality, tone, and cadence. Students will also get advice on appearance and best practices for creating a demo reel to get hired for on-air/digital jobs.

PANEL: “STAY READY, SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO GET READY”

The bootcamp will conclude with an exciting panel discussion on how to get and keep a job in journalism, as well as securing internships and other tips that would best serve students as they prepare for their careers. The following panelists and moderators were chosen based on their experiences and expertise in the field.
