2018 BABJReviews

The Baltimore Association of Black Journalists hosted the 3rd Annual #BABJReviews and #RealTalk with News Managers Saturday October 13 at Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication. This was a professional development event for those looking for improve their media careers by getting feedback and guidance. The event also offered insight into the roles of management and the impact on African-Americans.

The daylong event was divided into two parts.

The #BABJReviews offered half hour, one-on-one sessions for news clips, radio and TV reels, website and social media critiques as well as resume reviews. The expert volunteers included:

Print/Online – Andrea McDaniels, The Baltimore Sun

Broadcast TV/Video or Radio/Audio – Nicki Mayo, Nicki Mayo News LLC

Resume | Websites – Benet J. Wilson,  Aviation Queen

The #RealTak with News Managers panel explored the newsrooms of 2018 and the impact on African-American recruitment, retention and coverage. The panelists: Tanya Black, WJZ-TV Managing Editor; Jerome Chester, WBAL-TV Director of Programming and Public Affairs and Sam Davis, The Baltimore Sun Managing Editor offered raw insightful perspectives of how Baltimore newsrooms are handling staffing and content challenges.

The news managers stressed the importance of preparing future journalists at the college level. There’s also a need to identify and retain future newsroom managers in the Baltimore market.
